These devices are mainly stationed in dividers and certain areas of exits and interchanges. The absorber’s function is to enable the vehicle, which has veered from its lane, to collide into a device that absorbs most of the energy, instead of into the rigid obstacle. This is done by gradual slowing down of the striking vehicle. The energy absorption is carried out by the contraction of the device and to a lesser extent also of the vehicle.
There are some who claim that in the last 30 years energy absorbers have saved more lives than safety belts.
In Israel, the Inter Ministerial Committee for Traffic Devices has approved fixed installations and temporary installations of energy absorbers, according to the functioning levels fixed in test conditions that are defined by the speed of collision, the angle of collision, and the weight of the colliding vehicle.
